Yes it is now official – the Amsterdam Drag Queen Olympics have moved to summer! After 5 years of being held on 29th April, the games have now moved to 31st July 2009, on the eve of Gay Pride.

Miss Jennifer Hopelezz, who has been responsible for bringing the Games to Amsterdam explains: “ The weather last year reeked havoc on the girls’ hair, make-up and frocks, and we simply can’t afford to run that risk again So we moved the Games to a warmer month. As you know, many competitors are wearing priceless gowns and have spent literally days at the beautician. And to be perfectly honest with you, some of the girls really aren’t all that attractive underneath all that hair and make-up. I feel strongly that there are certain things you really shouldn’t subject your audience to. Don’t forget this is a family event, and children are easily frightened, something we tend too often to overlook.”

The Olympics are not only a show of a competitor’s strength and technical ability, but elements such as hair, poise, make-up, nails and accessories are just as important. As tradition dictates, the Games will be held at the Homomonument.
