Victoria Beckham is to appear as a judge on American Idol.

The Spice Girl turned fashion designer has agreed to make a “one off appearance” on the show, her publicist confirmed.

There has been speculation that the 35-year-old could be being lined up as a full-time replacement for Paula Abdul, who announced her departure as a judge on the US TV singing contest on Twitter.

But it’s understood that at the moment mum-of-three Posh – who is thought to be filming her part this week – wants to focus on her fashion range and wouldn’t be able to commit to anything other than a guest role.

Hosted by Ryan Seacrest, American Idol remains the most popular show in the US, with around 26 million viewers tuning in to watch each episode.

Seacrest reportedly signed a £8.9 million deal recently to front the show, which has spawned stars such as Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, for the next three years.

While Paula has announced she is leaving, fellow judges Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson will return. And it’s been confirmed that Kara DioGuardi, who joined the judging panel last season, will be back for the new series.

The ninth season of American Idol starts in January.
